On 25th December, 1914, the 2nd Essex battalion of 12 Brigade, 4th Division moved into trenches near Le Touquet, a small hamlet near Ploegsteert, in Belgium. At 2pm on 29th December, the day on which John Hughes was killed, a shell hit the house in which the machine-gun team were sheltering, killing three men and wounding another five. |
